Colour lies at the heart of Canadian contemporary artist Lorie Dee's artistic expression. Lorie explore the relationships between the lines of colour and the emotions they evoke. Relationships that are not interwoven but run parallel in a dance.
Inspired by the natural world, Lorie works exclusively with natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and linen. Her process starts with the meticulous application of individual fibers directly onto a prepared canvas.
Instead of using traditional weaving or stitching, Lorie secures each cord in a precise, parallel sequence with archival-grade adhesive. This method allows her to keep the raw, tactile quality of the cotton, wool, and linen while ensuring that the piece remains structurally sound. The pattern is determined by how the cord naturally turns back on itself. This requires a careful, almost mathematical approach to ensure every cord fits perfectly within the edge of the canvas without a single one crossing over another.
