Kim Ross believes the meaning of beautiful ceramic objects resides in the making process. Using simple forms in her creations allows for accessibility and familiarity. The desire to make a mark on some unblemished surface – like a freshly painted wall or just-poured concrete sidewalk–is within all of us. Making functional and sculptural objects out of clay fulfills that desire, and sheI hopes her work reminds the viewer of his or her own innate desire to touch and mark something.
No matter what she makes, she incorporate an element of happenstance through the soda firing process and use of unstable glazes. The unpredictable firing and glazing process makes each piece unique.
