Andrew Beauchamp is a Canadian glass artist and technician. He has worked as a teaching assistant, a production glassblower, a gallery installer and as an assistant to many well-known Canadian glass artists. Andrew is currently the Studio Technician at The Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.
His series of sandcast bowls were developed while experimenting with centrifugal casting. Andrew makes a clear glass cylinder that becomes the base of the bowl and before it cools it is placed in a mould made out of a mixture of olivine sand and bentonite clay.
Hot glass is ladled out of the furnace and poured in the mould on top of the base. The mould is then spun and the liquid glass is forced up the walls of the mould to form the bowl before cooling. This allows him to maintain the stone like texture on the outside of the bowl, contrasting with the clear liquid quality on the inside.
