Artisan Kate Church combines her unprecedented talent with a witty and ferociously unique style to create stunning contemporary dolls that appeal to the child within all of us. Kate describes her work as 'sculptural puppetry': figures that combine the essence of detail and line with movement and life. These figures come to life through the manipulation of polymer clay for their faces and limbs. Kate’s playful use of materials stems from her experience as a past costume designer for Cirque du Soleil. This process continues until 'something happens' and Kate is satisfied that the dolls are ready. However, she often feels that the dolls possess a pre-determined form and that she is merely an observer as they take on that shape. Her accomplishments also include an appearance on Our Little House Children’s Television Series as a puppet designer and an Award of Merit for the Ontario Crafts Council Exhibition in her earlier career.
Utilizing change, colour, movement, and emotion, Kate aims to create visual pleasure, laughter and tenderness to inspire a reaction in her viewers. Kate delights in the joy that can be seen on the faces of people who are touched by her work. She wants people to discover something for themselves and about themselves, using their energy as fuel to continue with her work.
