Inspired by history and mythology, Sylvie Belanger uses cast glass as a means of expression for her imagination. After completing her BFA in sculpture at the University of Quebex, Sylvie further honed her glass skills at the Centre Del Vidre de Barcelona in Spain, and at CEGEP Vieux in Montreal. With a special fascination in the technique of 'sand-casting', Sylvie has opened two glass studios with her studio partner Diane Ferland.
An extremely physically demanding technique, "sand casting' begins with the creation of a unique plaster mold which is then imprinted into wt sand. Assitional flourishes of embedded coppers and metal filaments give Sylvie's work the look of unearthed, ancient artifacts. The application of soft coloured powdersinto the dand further accentuates Sylvie's personal expression. In a final step, molten glass, at a temperature of 2000 degrees F, is poured directly into the sand cavity. As the glass cools, the brightly coloured glass powders reveal themselves, and the masterpiece that begun solely from Sylvie's imagination begins to take form. |
