Born and raised in Toronto, Anne Renouf studied Fine Art at the University of Toronto, specializing in drawing, painting and printmaking. In 1997, she relocated to Peterborough, and established her own studio. She began working at the Cossar Art Center, participating in many group and solo exhibitions. At the Art Gallery of Peterborough, she taught classes and facilitated workshops. At her Hunter Street studio she began studying the human condition and exploring a sense of place.
In 2006, Anne Renouf had the opportunity to live and work in Ocracoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. During this residency she began a series of work focusing on drawing, using different materials and putting it in a broader scale she called this series ‘Pilgrimage.’ The sea, the dunes, the wild moody skies - these elements found their way into her. Feeling the vastness of her surroundings, she wanted to record her ‘pilgrimage’ through that ethereal space, and how it was changed by her presence there. Also developed in Ocracoke were a few abstract landscape drawings that recorded changes and moods, both in the weather and within her self, and ultimately led to a different way of working.
