The richly textured surface of Cheryl Wyre’s hand built vessels are inspired by the rugged landscape of the American southwest. After visiting the Grand Canyon some years ago, Cheryl sought to replicate the appearance of layered strata and of rock eroded by the elements.
All of Cheryl’s works are constructed from clay that is stretched and cut into individual slabs that are layered to form the walls of her vessels. The entire piece is then coated in a layer of black glaze which is then wiped from the exterior such that some colour remains in the cracks and crevices in the clay. This is further enhanced by rubbing coloured oxides in select areas. Cheryl’s minimal works are also a nod to her Japanese heritage from which she derives further inspiration, particularly from the late Joman period of Japanese ceramics. |
